"In the name of my forefathers"  by Gregory J R Wenzlick

 It was not until I reached my mid-forties, that I came to realise that all the stories of family history and exploits as told by my Grandfather and Father before their deaths, had been disregarded in youthful ignorance.

 With the death of our forebears, and the mantle of family seniority in our own families being passed down and realised, a sense of importance at the need to seek lost information drives us to seek truths, tales and information of our ancestors.

 In this way, we honour them and the memories of lives once lived are recalled. The word “genealogy” means an account of descent from ancestors, or study of pedigree. It is from our genes, the biological factor determining inherited characteristics, which help us to understand ourselves more completely.

 I sought to make a record of my ancestors, a people from the other side of the world, who sought to make a better standard of life for themselves and descendants, away from an area of constant wars, encroaching over-population, and ethnic cleansing.

 Until the advent of computer technology being a household item, such research and recording was done by handwriting, typewriter, post mail, and library book research. Now armed with internet access, email, and computer programs I was able to start collecting and recording family information.

 Home internet providers allow a limited amount of “space”, for personal webpages, which can be easily accessed and made with limited computer skills. In my case I was able to fit most of my records onto my homepage in the XtraMSN ISP group pages.

 This has resulted in a number of people from all over the world getting in contact with me about our family genealogy, and I am able to share and obtain more and more information about our family.

 My Great-grandfather Gregor Johann Wenzlick, his brother Johann Nepomuk Wenzlick, and cousin Adalbert Wenzlick were among the second group of Bohemian settlers to arrive in 1866. Their story can be viewed on my website;
